Organizational Background

Purpose / Objectives

The Hygiene Promotion Team Leader (HPTL) will be responsible for leading and supervising hygiene promotion activities within the WASH Component. The HPTL will ensure that hygiene promotion interventions are effectively implemented in targeted communities, in line with project objectives, donor requirements, and humanitarian standards. This role includes the direct supervision of Hygiene Promoters, community mobilizers, and volunteers, as well as coordination with community leaders, local authorities, and other WASH actors.

The HPTL will play a key role in ensuring that hygiene promotion activities are culturally appropriate, inclusive, and focused on improving safe water, sanitation, and hygiene practices to reduce public health risks and disease transmission.


Key Responsibilities / Duties

Team Management & Supervision

  • Lead, supervise, and support the Hygiene Promotion Team in planning, implementing, and monitoring hygiene promotion activities.
  • Conduct regular team meetings, assign tasks, and ensure that Hygiene Promoters understand project objectives and deliverables.
  • Provide technical guidance, on-the-job coaching, and capacity building to team members to enhance their knowledge and skills in hygiene promotion.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational policies, code of conduct, and safeguarding standards by all team members.

Hygiene Promotion Activities

  • Oversee the design and delivery of hygiene promotion sessions, awareness campaigns, and community mobilization activities.
  • Ensure the development and dissemination of appropriate Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials tailored to local culture, language, and literacy levels.
  • Promote key hygiene messages related to safe water handling, sanitation, menstrual hygiene management, handwashing, and disease prevention.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of community-based activities such as focus group discussions, hygiene campaigns, household visits, and school hygiene clubs.
  • Ensure the inclusion of vulnerable groups (children, women, elderly, persons with disabilities) in hygiene promotion activities.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Supervise data collection for hygiene promotion activities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Conduct field monitoring visits to assess the quality and impact of hygiene promotion interventions.
  • Compile regular reports on activities, achievements, challenges, and lessons learned; submit them to the Project Manager.
  • Ensure documentation of best practices, case studies, and success stories to support learning and reporting.

Coordination & Representation

  • Coordinate with local leaders, health facilities, schools, and community committees to strengthen hygiene promotion efforts.
  • Collaborate with other WASH teams to ensure integrated programming.
  • Represent the hygiene promotion team in internal meetings and external coordination forums as assigned by the supervisor.

Other Duties

  • Ensure that all activities comply with humanitarian principles, Sphere Standards, and donor requirements.
  • Always maintain confidentiality and respect when working with communities and beneficiaries.
  • Perform any other duties as requested by the line manager to support project objectives.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Community Development, Environmental Health, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in hygiene promotion, community mobilization, or public health programming, with at least 1 year in a supervisory/team leader role.
  • Strong knowledge of hygiene promotion approaches, WASH standards, and participatory community engagement methodologies.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training, IEC materials, and awareness campaigns.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills, with proven ability to manage a team in field settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse communities and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Fluency in Arabic (spoken and written); basic English skills are an asset.
  • Commitment to humanitarian values, safeguarding principles, and accountability to affected populations.
