Job Description
Background
NRC has been actively engaged in the Education in
Emergencies (EiE) sector in Yemen, with excellent presence in Ma’rib
governorate, where NRC implemented formal and non-formal education
interventions to respond to the protracted conflict and repeated displacement
that continue to disrupt children’s access to safe and quality education. The
ongoing humanitarian crisis has left schools under-resourced, overcrowded, and
vulnerable to future shocks. NRC’s education interventions in Ma’rib will focus
on restoring learning opportunities for crisis-affected children, supporting
school-based planning, and promoting inclusive and protective learning
environments.
The Education Assistant plays a key role in
implementing NRC’s education strategy at the field level. This includes
supporting the formal education, through driving children to schools,
supporting their retention and contributing to the improvement of their
learning outcomes and psychological wellbeing. This position operates within an
established education program and requires strong collaboration with internal
teams (such as WASH, Shelter, and Protection) as well as external actors,
including local authorities and cluster partners.
Responsibilities
Roles and responsibilities
As a part of a Education Team, the role shares a
collective responsibility to coordinate, undertake, monitor and
deliver the activities outlined in the project’s documents as per NRC standards.
The Education Assistant in Ma’rib will be
responsible for supporting NRC’s education interventions in the targeted
schools. The role focuses on restoring and sustaining access to quality
education for displaced and conflict-affected children by improving school
environments, supporting school-level planning, and working closely with
communities. A key part of the role is to work closely with schools’
administration to create a safe and protective learning environment, in
addition to providing support to the implementing partner. The assistant will
also ensure safe, inclusive, and child-friendly learning spaces in coordination
with other NRC teams and education stakeholders.
Generic Responsibilities
- Apply
NRC’s standard operating procedures, technical tools, and accountability
frameworks to all aspects of education programming to maintain quality,
consistency, and compliance with organizational standards.
- Plan
and carry out assigned activities in line with the approved work plan,
ensuring they meet technical standards, address the needs of affected
communities, and are completed within set timelines and budgets.
- Regularly
document field progress, beneficiary numbers, challenges, and successes in
line with internal reporting schedules and donor requirements, ensuring
information is clear, timely, and based on field evidence.
- Keep
proper records of project activities, including attendance sheets,
training reports, meeting minutes, and distribution lists, in line with
NRC’s document retention and compliance policies.
- Identify
and communicate opportunities to improve implementation methods, address
emerging needs, or adjust approaches to better respond to local contexts
and community feedback.
- Ensure
that NRC programming focuses on the most at-risk groups — including
displaced children, girls, and children with disabilities — and look for
new ways to reach those who may be excluded or underserved.
- Support
colleagues and community members involved in project delivery through
coaching, training sessions, and mentoring, contributing to long-term
capacity development.
- Maintain
regular communication and strong relationships with education offices,
school leadership, community groups, and implementing partners to foster
ownership and improve coordination across stakeholders.
- Compliance
and adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures, (if a
function role) and a specific responsibility for the functions
policies and procedures
Specific responsibilities:
- Responsible
for implementing the planned education activities at the field level in
close coordination with the field partner team and Education Officer
- In
close cooperation with the members of the project team provide technical
support in implementation of the planned activities at the field level in
districts
- Ensure
that activities are in accordance with norms and standards defined by the
education team
- Provide
technical support and guidance to the field teams in implementation of
field tasks/activities
- Provide
inputs and support in reporting of the technical needs and support of the
field teams and report to the Education Officer
- Contribute
to preparation of the monthly reports and as required
- Provide
technical inputs and data of the field to the Education officer when
required in development of proposals and budgets
- Technically
Support partner in community mobilization, data collection and analysis.
- Communicate,
exchange information and co-operate with relevant communities and the
community level
- Provide
support in working closely with the local staff of Education Sector
partners in Ministries, UN agencies, Institutions and Non-Governmental
Organizations at the community level and governorate level when required
- Participate
in relevant meetings when required.
- Actively
promote the rights of IDPs/returnees and access to formal and non-formal
education.
- Enhance
capacity/knowledge of partner staff and support the formal and non-formal
education activities in the field.
- Knowledge
of prior experience in designing/ delivering training or curriculum
development will be an added value.
- Any
other tasks as delegated by the line managers.

Experience
- At
least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in Education in
Emergencies (EiE)
- A
proven record of knowledge of design, and implementation of INEE
projects
- Familiar
with Southern Yemen situation and geography
- Able
to work in highly in secure environment
- Team
Player, flexible, hardworking and able to cope with short deadlines
- Good
documentation and report writing skills.
Formal Education
- B.SC/BE
in Education, rural development protection or other related Social
Sciences.
Context related skills, knowledge and experience
Context/specific skills, knowledge and experience:
- Good
knowledge and understanding of Education in Emergencies, Community Based
Education, and Accelerated/ remedial Learning Program.
- Good
knowledge of the fields and context in Marib and overall Yemen
- Good
Knowledge of coordination mechanisms with education stakeholders and
communities
- Experience
working in IDP settings and/or in schools facing emergency-related
interruptions and strong understanding of education challenges in Ma’rib,
especially in areas affected by displacement or conflict.
- Familiarity
with the coordination landscape in Ma’rib and ability to engage with
multiple sectors.
- Strong
interpersonal skills and ability to engage youth, parents, and school
actors in challenging environments.
- Knowledge
of how to make schools safer and more inclusive for children with
disabilities.
